Phillies clinch first NL East title in 14 years!!!

// September 30th, 2007 // No Comments » // Baseball

Thanks to a nearly unprecedented collapse by the Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies have today captured their first National League East title since 1993. The Mets had led by seven games on September 12th with seventeen games left to play. They then proceeded to lose twelve of their last thirteen, while the Phils won thirteen of their last fourteen. Then, on the last day of the season, the baseball gods smiled down on Philadelphia for the first time in a really long time as the Marlins posted a seven run first inning up at Shea, before a pitch had even been thrown at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies did their part, beating Washington 6-1 thanks to a strong pitching performance by veteran Jamie Moyer and the offense provided by MVP candidate Jimmy Rollins and reigning MVP Ryan Howard.

So, on to the playoffs for the Phils, who will find out who they play after tomorrow’s one game playoff to determine whether the San Diego Padres or the Colorado Rockies are the winners of the National League Wild Card.

West Ham 0 – 1 Arsenal

// September 29th, 2007 // No Comments » // Arsenal FC

Robin van Persie’s headed goal in the 13th minute was enough to see the Gunners earn a tough three points away to West Ham at Upton Park this afternoon.

This is the kind of game that would have been a draw or loss last season, but this year, there’s a different attitude in the side, and it’s great to see. We’re having connectivity issues here at the house, so I’m forced to keep things brief.

One week from tomorrow…

Arsenal 2 – 0 Newcastle

// September 25th, 2007 // No Comments » // Arsenal FC

Two second half goals within six minutes of each other were enough to see a very young Arsenal side ease past a full-strength Newcastle in this evening’s 3rd round Carling Cup tie at the Grove.

Nicklas Bendtner’s towering header, followed shortly by Denilson’s smash from 25 yards sees the Gunners added to Saturday’s draw for the 4th round. Also on Saturday is a trip to Upton Park for a league match against West Ham. The Hammers did the double over us last season, so let’s hope this good start to the season continues. Kickoff is at 10AM ET, and the match is being broadcast live here in the US on Setanta USA.

Giants 24 – 17 Redskins

// September 23rd, 2007 // No Comments » // New York Giants

“Giants suck!” That was the text message I received from Erik Mitchell just a few moments into this afternoon’s game, and I agreed with the sentiment. After going 6-2 to start last season, the Giants had lost eight of their last ten, including the first two games of this season. Two games in which the defense gave up a total of eighty points! So it was that I sat down to watch today’s game against the Redskins with very low expectations.

Sure enough, things were going pretty much to script in the first half. The Giants scored first, a field goal, to take an early 3-0 lead. The Redskins then scored seventeen unanswered points to make it 17-3 at the half. Eli Manning, the target of my derision for most of last season, has had a good season so far, and that continued today. Unfortunately, everyone he was throwing to forgot how to catch. So, despite the ball landing in their hands, on six different occasions, the ball found it’s way onto the turf.

The second half was a different story. The Giants opened the half with a great drive to close to within a touchdown. They then tied the score early in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the defense was shutting the Redskins down. It was like a completely different team had taken the field in the second half.

With just over five minutes to go in the game, Manning found Plaxico Burress in the flat, and the receiver ran thirty six yards and split the defense to score the go ahead touchdown.

The offense had gotten the lead, but it was up to the defense now to preserve it. It looked as though another late game collapse was on the cards as the Redskins converted third down after third down. Out of timeouts, the Redskins found themselves with first and goal with 58 seconds left. Surely they’d send this game to overtime. Somehow, this Giants defense, who many (including myself) had written off for the season, held firm. After spiking the ball on first down to stop the clock, the Redskins had three chances to reach the end zone. All three came up short.

An incredible road victory for the Giants, and one that has to boost the confidence for the rest of the season. Too bad their next opponents are the equally rejuvenated Eagles who, after looking downright anemic in their first two games, exploded for fifty six points yesterday in a home win over the Lions. I don’t think NBC was expecting two 1-2 teams when they set the schedule, but this Sunday night’s got the making of another classic chapter in the history of the great NFC East rivalry.

Arsenal 5 – 0 Derby

// September 22nd, 2007 // No Comments » // Arsenal FC

Emmanuel Adebayor’s hat trick will be the talk of the match, but it was Abou Diaby who got the Gunners going after 10 minutes against Derby earlier today. The Frenchman’s smashed strike from 25 yards out across the face of goal and into the top corner gave Arsenal a lead they were always expecting, and one that they were never in trouble of surrendering. Apart from Adebayor’s three, Cesc Fabregas scored yet again – another long range effort. What a difference a year makes.

So, a bit of padding to the goal differential, and another three points to stay top for another week. Next up is the non-televised third round Carling Cup fixture against Newcastle. Kickoff is 2:45 PM ET on Tuesday and from what I can determine, the only way to follow it will be ATVO. Expect Newcastle to field a fairly strong side, and Arsenal to feature mostly youngsters and reserve players. Should be interesting.
